Andrea "Lion" Mathews
Andrea Katherine Mathews was a singer, lyricist, and composer whose voice could shift from hauntingly intimate to powerfully expressive in the same breath. Over the years, she built a distinctive musical identity, first coming to broader recognition through the indie pop and experimental duo Blue Tofu, a collaboration with producer and composer Tim Story. Their self-titled debut album, released in 2001, took nearly four years of careful writing and sonic exploration. Andrea’s lyrics, rich with imagery and emotional honesty, were paired with Tim’s atmospheric loops, electronics, and textured instrumental arrangements. The result was music that defied categorization... ambient and electronic yet soulful and deeply human.
Her vocals on Blue Tofu drew praise for being seductive, smoky, and full of contrast... hushed and haunting in one moment, bold and incisive in the next. Reviewers often noted that Andrea’s words were more than poetic; they carried emotional weight and an undercurrent of defiance, making the music resonate on a deeply personal level.
Beyond the music, Andrea was a devoted wife and mother, and a strong believer in Christ. She lived her faith daily, standing firmly on the rock of Jesus. For many years she found peace in the quiet beauty of the North Carolina mountains, where she embraced a life of reflection and creativity.
In 2024, Hurricane Helene struck Western North Carolina and changed Andrea’s world forever. She moved from a life of peaceful contentment to one of tireless action, ultimately leading and managing two volunteer camps to help coordinate recovery efforts. She became a constitutional activist, spearheading movements for massive change and standing boldly for her convictions. Her faith shone brightly through this time, as she professed the name of Jesus daily and inspired others to do the same.
In her final years, Andrea’s music reflected this transformation. It was full of love, intimacy, and devotion to God, capturing the beauty of a woman breaking free from the confines of her past and stepping into a new life with her beloved husband, William “Rabbit” Barthel.
Andrea passed away on May 30, 2025, shortly after recording her final three songs and formally establishing The Savage Saints. She saw the writing on the wall and, after decades of struggling with fibromyalgia and a recent diagnosis of Lyme disease, she faced an intense daily battle with grace and determination. Even through her pain, she poured her soul into her music and her mission, helping thousands of people and standing steadfastly for what is right.
Her legacy will forever be enshrined within her music and The Savage Saints Ministry, where she laid the foundation for a mission that continues to inspire and empower others. Andrea’s life is a lasting invitation for others to get closer to Christ, profess their faith boldly, and live with courage and conviction.
